What is Dynamic Color, and how is it limited?

This is definitely old news by now, but in case you haven’t heard of it, Dynamic Color is one of the more popular features of Android 12. It picks certain colors present in your phone’s wallpaper and makes a custom color scheme that will run throughout the entire UI of the phone. This is one of my personal favorite features, but it’s pretty limited. The software itself will choose the colors in the scheme, and it’ll present you with four different options. There’s no way to truly customize your color scheme, and that doesn’t sit well with some users. Also, the colors that the system picks are all muted in nature. Some people want there to be more vivid colors throughout their software, but they’re all toned down by Google.

This is where the Repainter app comes in

Android 12 users’ prayers have been answered in the form of the new app called Repainter. This app gives users a host of customization tools to help personalize their color scheme. You can pick and fine-tune the colors that are present throughout your software. If you want eye-meltingly saturated colors, you can do that. If you want a monochromatic theme, go for it! You’re the one holding the reins.

There’s a catch, however

If you’re reading this and thinking “I bet this requires my phone to be rooted” then you’d be mostly right. The Repainter app was originally fully functional without root access; too good to be true, right? However, because of the January security patch, the app can’t do everything it can. Because of this, the developers had to make some changes. These changes will unfortunately cause the app to be limited on non-rooted devices. Non-rooted devices will still be able to choose their colors, but that’s about it.

Getting this app shouldn’t be too hard

As with most apps like this, it involves getting more than one app. You’re going to want to first download Shizuku. This is an app that’s available to download for free on the Play Store. After that point, you’ll be able to download the beta version of Repainter. Just note that it costs $4.99 to download. Repainter will work on Pixel devices, and that’s it for right now. There is a version for One IU 4 coming, but it’s not clear when it will come out.
